Terms of Service

Last updated: October 4, 2026

1. Who we are

Can I is operated by Daniel Dethlefs ("we", "us", "the seller"). Can I is a family chore-and-permission app: parents assign chores, kids submit photo proof, and parents approve before privileges unlock. By creating an account or continuing to use the service, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

2. Who may use it

Parent accounts must be created by an adult (18 or older) who has authority to manage the family group. Kid accounts are created and managed by a parent through a family invite code. By creating a parent account you confirm you are the parent or legal guardian of any child you add, and you consent to that child's use of the service.

3. Your account

  • Keep your username, password, recovery code and any recovery email secure. You are responsible for activity under your account.
  • Provide accurate information and keep it up to date.
  • Email is never required and child accounts cannot use one. Parents may voluntarily add an email only for password recovery.
  • If you add an email, we strongly recommend creating one only for Can I and excluding names, school, location, or other identifying details. Reusing an address can allow activity to be connected across services if that email account or another service is tracked or breached.
  • By choosing the optional email feature, you acknowledge this risk and accept responsibility for securing that email account. Can I cannot control another provider's security or tracking. This does not waive rights that cannot legally be waived.

4. Acceptable use

You must not misuse the service. That includes:

  • Using it for anything unlawful, fraudulent, or to spam or harass others.
  • Posting content that infringes someone else's intellectual property, or that is abusive, hateful, or sexual — especially anywhere children can see it.
  • Uploading malware, probing or attacking the service, or scraping it.
  • Reverse engineering, reselling, or circumventing plan limits or technical controls.

Shared chore ideas, reviews and ratings may be moderated; we may remove content or restrict accounts that break these rules.

5. Photos, videos and your content

  • Proof photos are taken live in the app and are deleted automatically once a parent approves or rejects them.
  • Reference photos, family wallpapers and how-to videos you upload stay private to your family until you delete them.
  • You keep ownership of your content. You grant us a limited license to host and process it solely to provide the service.
  • Only upload content you have the right to use. Rights holders may contact us to request a takedown; repeated infringement may end an account.

6. Subscriptions and payments

Paid plans (such as Family Platinum) are sold through our reseller Paddle. Payment, billing, tax, cancellation and refund mechanics are governed by Paddle's Buyer Terms.

Our order process is conducted by our online reseller Paddle.com. Paddle.com is the Merchant of Record for all our orders. Paddle provides all customer service inquiries and handles returns.

  • Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled.
  • When you cancel, paid features stay on until the end of the period you have already paid for.
  • Switching between monthly and annual billing takes effect right away with prorated billing handled by Paddle.

7. Service level

We work hard to keep Can I available, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free service. Features may change over time. The service is provided "as is" and we disclaim implied warranties (including merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose) to the fullest extent permitted by law.

8. Our content

We own the service and its intellectual property — the software, design, branding and documentation. We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use it within your plan.

9. Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, consequential or special damages (including loss of profits, data or goodwill), and our total liability is capped at the fees you paid in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability for fraud, death or personal injury where the law does not allow it.

9a. Parental responsibility and safety

Can I is an organising tool only. Parents and guardians are solely responsible for the chores they assign, the permissions they grant, supervising their children, and making sure every task is safe and age-appropriate. Automatic photo checks and ghost-camera approvals can be wrong and are a convenience, not a guarantee that a task was done or done safely. Chore ideas, ratings and how-to videos shared by other families are their own and are not checked or endorsed by us — use your own judgement before following them.

9b. Beta features

Beta and early-access features are provided for testing, may change, break or be removed at any time, and are offered without any warranty. Beta perks (such as complimentary Platinum or founding badges) may be changed or ended at our discretion.

9c. Your indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Daniel Dethlefs from claims, losses and costs arising from your content, your use or misuse of the service, the tasks and permissions you set for your household, or your breach of these terms.

10. Suspension and termination

We may suspend or terminate access for material breach of these terms, non-payment, security or fraud risk, or repeated or serious policy violations. When an account ends, associated data (including any remaining photos and videos) is deleted after a short grace period.

11. General

  • These terms are governed by the laws of the seller's home jurisdiction, and disputes will be heard in its courts, unless mandatory local law gives you other rights.
  • You may not assign these terms without our consent; we may assign them in connection with a merger or acquisition.
  • We are not responsible for delays caused by events beyond our reasonable control.
  • We may update these terms; continued use after an update means you accept the new terms.

12. Contact

Questions about these terms: contact Daniel Dethlefs through the in-app feedback box. For payment, billing or refund questions, contact Paddle at paddle.net.
